As a smoker, you’re good at saying, “Screw you!” to people when they talk down to you...so we recommend this movie highly.

“Thank You for Smoking”

Highlights

“Gentlemen, it’s called education. It doesn’t come off the side of a cigarette carton. It comes from our teachers and our parents.”

“I’m sorry. I just don’t see the point in a warning label for something people already know.”

“It’s the job of every parent to warn their children of all the dangers in the world...So when [kids] get older, they can choose for themselves.”

Finally, you can feel good about smoking again:

Okay, wait. This clip is actually satire, so it’s designed to make you feel bad about being a smoker.

But as a smoker, you’re good at saying, “Screw you!” to people when they talk down to you…so we recommend this movie highly. Because while “they” think it’s a parody of you, what you’ll discover is it’s actually a parody of them.

It takes actor Aaron Eckhart, as tobacco-industry spokesperson Nick Naylor, to drive the most important points home with quotes like these—starting with Naylor’s brilliant analysis from the video clip above:

  • “How on Earth would Big Tobacco profit off of the loss of this young man? Now I hate to think in such callous terms; but if anything, we’d be losing a customer. It’s not only our hope, it’s in our best interest to keep Robin alive and smoking.”

As well as other common-sense quotes like these:

  • Gentlemen, it’s called education. It doesn’t come off the side of a cigarette carton. It comes from our teachers and more importantly, our parents. It is the job of every parent to warn their children of all the dangers in the world, including cigarettes, so that one day when they get older, they can choose for themselves.”
  • “I’m sorry. I just don’t see the point in a warning label for something people already know.”
