Woke Advertising

Highlights

Madison Avenue was staunch in its defense of the nuclear family and patriotism, back in the days of black-and-white TV.

Toxic Masculinity is like porn—you know it when you see it.

Love and humanity—not human willfulness in service to a radical, outlier expression—are the ways to create a better America.

Advertising has always pushed cultural norms. Madison Avenue was staunch in its defense of the nuclear family and patriotism, back in the days of black-and-white TV. The politically “woke” in those days probably saw this as culturally oppressive. But back then, Madison Avenue would never have overtly chosen sides in 50/50 fights. The idea of insulting half of a customer base would have been seen as outright malpractice.

This Gillette advertisement on toxic masculinity is a case study of a genuine, cultural misread and insults all men:

Toxic Masculinity is like porn—you know it when you see it.

Good examples of good ideas:

Modern Family is virtue signaling done properly and well. Jay is the old-school guy who’s being put out to pasture culturally. But it is not an unsympathetic portrayal; Jay captures the spirit of yesteryear America. While he would rather not have a gay son or a mangina son-in-law, the love of his own trumps all.

Moral of the Story: love and humanity—not human willfulness in service to a radical, outlier expression—are the ways to create a better America. The PM is chill. We maintain that we all need to chillax and stay in the “Sane Lane.”
